Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Do Fleming yaupons make pollen
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
I have been told that all Will Fleming yaupons are male and can serve as effective pollinators for female yaupons (the females I have are Pride of Houston variety). Is this true? Also, can dwarf yaupons serve as pollinators?ANSWER:
The 'Will Fleming' Ilex vomitoria (Yaupon) is, indeed, a male with a columnar form. They do produce staminate flowers that have pollen to fertilize the female pistillate flowers. 'Schillings Dwarf' and 'Stokes's Dwarf' are both male yaupons and both produce pollen. You can see pictures of these and other cultivars of Ilex vomitoria on the Learn2Grow web page.
