We are looking for a list of the trees occurring along and in the vicinity of the Colorado River at Hornsby Bend circa 1820.ANSWER:
Some of the tree and shrub species occuring in the area of Hornsby Bend at the time of the arrival of English-speaking settlers include:
- Pecan, Carya illinoinensis
- Cottonwood, Populus deltoides
- Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis
- Black Willow, Salix nigra
- Boxelder, Acer negundo
- Sugarberry, Celtis laevigata
- Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis
- Roughleaf Dogwood, Cornus drummondii
- Green Ash, Fraxinus pennsylvanica
- Mexican Plum, Prunus mexicana
- Shumard Oak, Quercus shumardii
- Escarpment Live Oak, Quercus fusiformis
- Post Oak, Quercus stellata
- Carolina basswood, Tilia americana var. caroliniana
- American Elm, Ulmus americana
- Rusty Blackhaw, Viburnum rufidulum
- Blackjack Oak, Quercus marilandica
- Red Mulberry, Morus rubra
- Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana
- Honey Mesquite, Prosopis glandulosa
This list is by no means complete, but the species included here would all have been found at Hornsby Bend or nearby at that time.
