Original Format: Digital Orientation: Landscape Shot: Close-up of a branch with developing female cones. Photographer's note: "These are the female cones of the common juniper. They are very small and difficult to spot. What is significant is that they are rare in the known populations in Georgia. The species reaches the southern end of its eastern range in Madison and Elbert Counties, Georgia in vicinity of the Broad River. These populations are considered to be Pleistocene relicts. Although some of the colonies can be locally extensive, most of the plants are usually male. Two of the four populations have one small patch of female plants each. They can be reluctant to produce berries. The berries take up to three years to ripen (green to blue). We visited this site two week prior and found most plants with un-open male cones. On my visit yesterday, most of the male cones had opened, released pollen, and fallen off. I noticed there seemed to be a miss-match in bloom time between male and female plants. Most of the female cones were still not open. This could help explain low berry production." Date Taken: 2013-04-26 NPIN Image Id: 40813
