Original Format: Digital Orientation: Portrait Shot: A flowering plant. Photographer's note: "The story of this variety of dwarf trillium is long. The short version: Dwarf trillium has eight recognized varieties, at least three of which have been officially described. In 1986, a new variety of dwarf trillium was found in some swampy woods in Whitfield County near Dalton, Georgia. In the 1990's, the site was scheduled to be developed and it was. Before it was destroyed, various people rescued as many of the plants as possible. Several of the plants were relocated to a private native plant garden in Cherokee County, Georgia. The plants are very happy in the new location and are propagating both by stolons and seeds. I had a rare opportunity to photograph them this year. As I understand, the new variety name is most commonly used but some people consider it a distinct species. The dwarf trillium is no more than eight inches high. The flowers begin white but grade to pink with age. There may still be a few plants in the wild but no one has been able to confirm that in recent years." Date Taken: 2009-03-13 NPIN Image Id: 64409
