A perennial with feathery, plume-like flower spikes and graceful, maple-like, hairy, basal foliage. The tiny flowers are pink to white. The petioles and flowering stems are hairy.
Early descriptions cited variety villosa, with more deeply lobed leaves, in the eastern part of the range, and variety macrorhiza, with shallower lobes, to the west. Variety macrorhiza is now defined as a synonym of variety villosa.
