This species was long known from the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico and into central Mexico. Its range was not believed to extend into the US. However, a population of Hunnemannia fumariifolia was recently discovered growing in one remote part of Big Bend National Park. Hunnemannia is a monotypic genus.
