Keckiella corymbosa
Keckiella corymbosa (Benth. ex A. DC.) Straw
Redwood Keckiella, Red Shrubby Penstemon
Scrophulariaceae (Figwort Family)
Synonym(s): Penstemon corymbosus
USDA Symbol: KECO2
USDA Native Status: L48 (N)
A low, dark green shrub with bright, brick red, bilaterally symmetrical flowers in bunches at branch ends.
After the summer heat dries the low mountains, driving most wildflowers to seed and browning the grasses, Red Shrubby Penstemon begins to flower, providing a final source of nectar before the hummingbirds must seek food higher in the cooler mountains or, if late in the season, migrate south. This small genus was recently segregated from the larger genus Penstemon; its name honors David Keck, a student of Penstemon and California plants in general.
