A low plant with pairs of deep blue-violet, bilaterally symmetrical flowers angling upward atop erect stems.
The species is representative of several skullcaps with dark blue-violet flowers. Narrowleaf Skullcap (S. angustifolia), which grows from eastern Washington south to southeastern Oregon and east to northern and central Idaho, has leaves with definite stalks and a corolla 3/4-1 1/4" (2-3 cm) long. Snapdragon Skullcap (S. antirrhinoides), found from southern Idaho to southern Oregon, northern California, central Nevada, and Utah, has flowers only 1/2-3/4" (1.5-2 cm) long.
