Utricularia intermedia
Utricularia intermedia Hayne
Flatleaf Bladderwort, Mountain Bladderwort
Lentibulariaceae (Bladderwort Family)
Synonym(s):
USDA Symbol: UTIN2
USDA Native Status: L48 (N), AK (N), CAN (N), GL (N), SPM (N)
In all species of Utricularia the bladders are elaborate traps. When a small organism brushes hairs near a bladder pore, the pores tiny door opens inward and water rushes inside, carrying the organism with it. The door quickly closes, the trapping process taking 1/460 second. Enzymes digest the victim. Comparatively large organisms, such as mosquito larvae, may be caught in the door; if the door is repeatedly triggered, they are then digested little by little. Utricularia intermedia has bladders on special branches distinct from the leaves.
